Giant Blazingstar

Mentzelia laevicaulis, known as the giant blazingstar, is a spectacular wildflower celebrated for its luminous, star-shaped yellow blossoms that expand up to 6 inches across. Its dramatic flowers open primarily at dusk and overnight, acting as a glowing beacon for nocturnal pollinators like hawkmoths, before closing under the afternoon sun. Complementing this stunning display is the plant's unique 'nature's Velcro' foliage—covered in microscopic, barbed hairs that effortlessly cling to clothing and animal fur.

Indigenous peoples held this plant in high regard for its versatile medicinal properties. The Cheyenne traditional healers utilized infusions of the roots to alleviate systemic ailments like rheumatism, arthritis, fevers, and the painful swelling associated with mumps and measles, as well as using it as a treatment to prevent thirst. Similarly, the Gosiute people prepared topical root infusions to soothe bruised swellings and reduce localized inflammation.
