Verbena bracteata

Verbena bracteata, commonly known as bigbract vervain or prostrate vervain, is a rugged, low-growing native wildflower characterized by its mat-forming growth habit and prominent, leaf-like floral bracts that extend beyond its tiny lavender to purple flowers. Extremely adaptable and drought-hardy, it thrives in dry, disturbed soils and open, sun-baked desert environments where few other plants can establish.

Historically, various Native American tribes utilized Verbena bracteata for a range of medicinal applications. Infusions and decoctions made from the leaves and roots were used by the Navajo and Lakota to treat stomach ailments, fevers, and headaches, while crushed leafy pastes were applied topically as poultices to relieve skin irritations and minor wounds.
