Streptanthella longirostris, commonly known as the longbeak streptanthella or longbeaked twistflower, stands out as a fascinating winter-spring ephemeral of North American deserts. As a monotypic genus, it represents a solitary evolutionary lineage uniquely adapted to thriving on sandy desert washes, flats, and open shrublands where its distinctive reflexed fruits and prolonged beaks help secure its next generation before the onset of extreme summer heat.

Indigenous groups in the Southwest historically utilized the plant for medicinal purposes. Specifically, a decoction of the plant was taken traditionally to alleviate kidney and bladder troubles, and the crushed fresh plants were rubbed on chickenpox sores to soothe itching and promote healing.
