Western Wolf Spider
Introduction:
Hogna antelucana is a large, terrestrial wolf spider known for its solitary nocturnal hunting habits and distinctive eyeshine when caught in light at night. Rather than relying on webs to capture prey, this robust spider actively pursues insects on open desert soil and shelters in silk-lined burrows or under rocks during the heat of the day.
Life Cycle: Adults mature in late spring and summer, with females carrying their egg sacs attached to their spinnerets and later transporting newly hatched spiderlings on their abdomens.
Size 0.75 in (1.9 cm)
Sexual Dimorphism: Females are noticeably larger and stockier than males, possessing broader abdomens and paler overall coloration.
Metamorphosis: incomplete (egg, larva, adult)
