It is a perennial subshrub. Flower heads are borne singly, with both ray flowers and disk flowers, compared to Acamptopappus sphaerocephalus which also grows in the Mojave Desert but has only disc flowers on heads in corymbose arrays. It is a low-growing, mounded shrub with narrow leaves and bright yellow, sunflower-like flower heads that bloom from April to June. The plant is drought-tolerant and thrives in well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils on slopes and in washes. it has narrow, pale green to light gray-green leaves, and often have a rough texture. Flowers are bright yellow, with both ray and disk flowers, blooming from April to June.
