Astragalus preussii
Preuss's Milkvetch
A robust perennial noted for its vivid purple-pink flowers and its status as a selenium-indicator plant, often found in heavy, alkaline soils. Astragalus preussii is an obligate selenophyte, meaning it requires selenium from the soil to thrive. Because it accumulates this mineral, the plant is toxic to livestock and is often called locoweed. It is particularly beautiful when in full bloom, as the deep purple flowers contrast sharply against the pale, often barren soils where it grows.
