It is a widespread perennial grass with a strong, creeping root system that makes it a common weed in many parts of the world. It has flat, green leaves and produces long, thin flower spikes with tiny, golden spikelets. It has creeping rhizomes which enable it to grow rapidly across grassland. It has flat, hairy leaves with upright flower spikes. The stems ('culms') grow to 60 inches (40–150 cm) tall. The flower spike is slender and erect, resembling a small wheat head. Each spikelet has 3 to 8 florets, which can be awnless or have very short awns. It is a perennial grass that reproduces by both seeds and underground rhizomes.
