Antirrhinum mohavea
Golden Lesser Mohavea
A charming desert annual with pale yellow, snapdragon-like flowers that exhibit a fascinating evolutionary mimicry of Mentzelia blossoms. Antirrhinum mohavea is a specialist of the Mojave Desert. It is smaller than its cousin, M. confertiflora, and lacks the dramatic purple centers. Interestingly, this plant does not produce nectar; it attracts bees by mimicking the appearance of Mentzelia flowers, which bloom in the same habitat and do provide a reward, a strategy known as floral mimicry.
