Dielis tolteca
Toltec Scoliid Wasp
Introduction:
Females have extensive orange on at least three tergites of the gaster. The first segment is variable from a complete band to no band at all, and every possible degree in between. Males have four pale yellow bands on both the tergites and sternites of the gaster and a yellow band on the pronotum.
Life Cycle: The female wasp lays her eggs on a paralyzed scarab beetle larva, often burying the larva and egg in a burrow. The wasp larva hatches and feeds on the beetle larva, growing and molting through several stages (instars).
