Mojave Birds

The Mojave desert is on the Pacific flyway and we see many migratory birds in addition to the native desert and riperian birds.

Mojave Birding Hotspots

Although the Mojave is mostly desert, and there are desert birds, the majority of the birds are to be found around water, either in a river, spring or lake. This is my hotspot list for birds, plants and hiking.

Mojave Plants

Although many will picture the desert as a wasteland, it is surprisingly full of life, even in the most trying times of the year. One quarter of the plants are endemic, found nowhere else.

Mojave Flowers

Flowers can be found almost anywhere in the Mojave desert, if you know where to look. Annual flowering plants, seen after rainstorms, are up to 80% endemic.

Mojave Insects

The variety and adaptability of Mojave insects is amazing. From damselflies to tarantula wasps the Mojave has interesting insects for all interests.

Mojave Reptiles

There are up to 50 unique reptiles living in the Mojave desert. From the famous desert tortoise to the reclusive Gila monster, there are fascinating reptiles in nearly every corner of the desert.

Mojave Mammals

The chief obstacles to survival in the desert are lack of water, shortage of food, and extreme temperatures. Mammals have both advantages and disadvantages in the desert.
